What is Iron Complex?

Iron Complex contains two forms of iron, plus vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin C, which is associated with iron absorption.

Iron is an essential dietary mineral that contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin. The body needs iron to produce energy and transport oxygen throughout the body.

Iron also supports immune function and cognitive health.

What are the benefits of Iron Complex?

Iron

Iron is essential for making red blood cells, particularly haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body. If iron levels are insufficient, the body does not receive adequate oxygen, leading to iron deficiency and fatigue. This can affect everything from mental and cognitive function to the immune system’s ability to fight infections.

Women who are still menstruating require more iron, as they lose iron through menstrual blood each month. After menopause, a woman’s iron requirements decrease and become the same as those recommended for men.

The NHS recommends the following daily iron intake:

  • Women aged 19 to 50 (or older if still menstruating): 14.8 mg
  • Men and women over 50 (post-menopause): 8.7 mg

There are two types of dietary iron:

  • Haem iron, found mostly in red meat
  • Non-haem iron, found in plant foods (vegetables, pulses, nuts, seeds) and some meat

Iron Complex contains both types of iron.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C supports the immune system, promotes skin protection and healing, reduces harmful free radicals, and helps lower blood pressure and ‘bad’ cholesterol—thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.

It is included in Iron Complex because it enhances the absorption of non-haem iron.

Vitamins B2, B12, and Folate

These vitamins help the body metabolise iron. They also contribute to:

  • Energy production in cells
  • The formation and maintenance of red blood cells
  • Normal immune function
  • Reducing tiredness and fatigue

Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactococcus lactis

These live bacteria cultures aid digestion by breaking down food in the gut, helping the body absorb nutrients more efficiently. Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid, which can improve non-haem iron absorption while supporting digestion and tolerance within the digestive tract.

Are there any side effects?

Some people may experience gastric discomfort or constipation when taking poorly absorbed forms of iron found in other supplements. However, our Iron Complex contains two bioavailable forms of iron, along with methylated forms of vitamin B12 and folate, as well as vitamin C to aid absorption.

Iron supplements can reduce the effectiveness of certain medications, while some reflux medications may decrease the amount of iron the body absorbs from food and supplements.

If you take prescription medication, it may be worth discussing iron supplements with your doctor. If in doubt, it is best to check your iron levels through a blood test with your healthcare provider.
